Digital tachograph
Sale, installation and calibration of tachographs
Since 2006, the law provides for the obligation to use the digital tachograph, equipment that allows you to store driving, working and rest times, driving speed, any checks by the competent authorities and vehicle failures in real time.
As a VDO Digital Partner, we can perform all the technical interventions required by law on both digital and analogue tachographs including:
- Periodic biannual review and issuance of the relevant certificate
- Repair and/or replacement of tachograph
- Digital tachograph calibration
- Initialisation and calibration of the digital tachograph
- Driver tachograph card data download
- Providing the software necessary for downloading data
- Refresher courses for drivers on the correct use of the digital tachograph
VDO digital tachograph data download
The digital tachograph is made up of two basic elements for its use: a vehicle unit (an apparatus similar to a car radio which includes two smart-card readers, a manual input selector, a data display screen and a small printer) and a smart-card.
On the smart-card, the data relating to the use of the vehicle are recorded, including:
- the identity of the driver
- driving and rest times
- driving modes
- vehicle identification data (by year)
- distance travelled
- malfunctions and faults (for one year)
- the speed travelled at in the last 24 hours of use of the vehicle
The legislation provides for the obligation to download the data of the mass memory of the tachograph within 90 days, while the driver card data should be downloaded within and no later than 28 days.
The downloaded data must be stored safely for one year from the date of use, in duplicate and in legible form, under penalty of a fine ranging from 51 to 99 euros for each driver and missing data for each day (EU Regulation 165/2014).
Calibration and biannual review of the tachograph
Article 23 of Regulation 165/2014 provides that tachographs are subject to review every two years by authorised workshops. The overhaul consists of inspecting the appliance to validate its conformity. Since 2007, TERMOSERVICE s.r.l. has been included in the list of workshops authorised to install, activate, calibrate, periodically check and repair smart tachographs pursuant to Regulation (EU) 165/2014 of 4 February 2014 and in particular Annex I C of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/799 and subsequent amendments with Authorisation Number: I3 AB 082 228. You can verify our authorisation here.
Updating the legislation: smart tachographs
The European reference legislation is based on regulations (EEC) no. 3820/85 and s3821/85 and related regulation 3821/85 has made the use of the tachograph mandatory for all lorries with a total mass at full load greater than 3.5t and on all vehicles used for the transport of passengers with a passenger number greater than 9, including driver.
From 15 June 2019, all newly registered vehicles, for which a tachograph is required, must be equipped with a new "smart" tachograph, pursuant to Regulation (EU) no. 165/2014 which provides for its introduction and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/799 and subsequent amendments which defines its technological characteristics. At the headquarters of TERMOSERVICE s.r.l., we periodically organise refresher courses for drivers, relating to updates on the legislation and the correct use of the digital tachograph.
